Beauty Product Review Friday – Oil of Olay Regenerist Cream

May 08

Hmmm, lotion. I love me some moisturizing, don’t you? However, finding the right mix for your skin type can be tricky. Also for those of us over 30, the anti-aging thing suddenly become important. What works? What is just good marketing? I wish I could answer those questions with some real definity but if I could, well, you would be reading my best selling book, not my blog! For now, I will settle for sharing with you one of my favorite moisturizers that I am not sure makes me look younger but it sure does make my skin happy.

Let me start by saying I am not a fan of store bought facial cleansers, moisturizers and serums. Well, at least I didn’t used to be. I was of the belief that the more expensive the product, the more likely it actually works. Let’s all go by La Mer! Yeah! However, because I am not made of money, my expectations needed to be more realistic. One day at Costco, I noticed a sale on Oil of Olay Regenerist Moisturizer.

The deal from Costco was two bottles for roughly $35. It was a particularly tight month and I was out of my expensive moisturizer so I took the plunge. I tried it that night and liked it. It was the right consistency and my skin felt really soft after I used it. You don’t need to use much because it is pretty concentrated, meaning the jar will go a long way. The smell was pleasant and I noticed that the next morning my skin still felt silky, as though I had just put it on.

Now, I am a bit compulsive about beauty products so I have a confession. Even though I was pleased with this product and had a Costco sized supply, I was still thinking I could find something better. I really like Philosophy brand products and I had recently read yet another article about their flagship moisturizer Hope in Jar:

So a month or so later, I had a coupon for Macy’s and decided to try out what I assumed would be a superior product because of the label. The consistency of this product disappointed me. It wasn’t oily but it felt as though it disappeared on my skin, leaving it wishing for more. I have normal to oily skin and I knew that this was what Philosophy recommended for my skin type, so it wasn’t a matter of a bad product-to-skin-type match up.

Within  a few weeks I was back to my Oil of Olay and now I can say I will not look back. The Regenerist line receives great reviews and I will officially jump on that band wagon. From what I can gather it is about $20 to purchase it online through Amazon or Ulta, or you can look for the Costco deal to come up again. I feel like this is a great bargain, considering I paid $38 for the highly touted Philosophy moisturizer that didn’t deliver.

*Update – I forgot to mention that this is supposed to be used as a after cleansing cream day and/or night. I usually use a primer with suncreen in the morning and this cream at night.

Awesome! I’m one who doesn’t like to spend a lot of money on moisturizers and cleansers and I haven’t found one that I absolutely love yet. I’m definitely gonna try Oil of Olay next time. Is it a night cream and day cream? I guess it doesn’t matter because I use sunscreen as my daytime now:) Thanks for the tips! Hope you’re starting to feel well. I’m so excited for you Jenn!

I have the opposite problem, I have very dry skin so if I don’t wear moisturizer I feel like my face will crack. I am into that spending lots of money so it must be better thing too and I just can’t crack the habit. I would much rather charge it than change, I know stupid! So I use the Murad line. My Mom use to sale it so I got it free and then she stopped and I started paying out of my nose. But seriously, it works with my skin and I really like it. My moisturizer has sunscreen so I just put it on and go (with makeup all over it of course). But maybe I will take your suggestion the next time I see it at Costco!

Love the Regenerist cream. It smells like apples. Philosophy’s Hope in a Jar smells really mediciney and you’re right, for the money the Olay cream is by far the best deal!! I love good deals :)

  4. How about cleansers next? My girlfriends and I were just talking about needing some guidance in that department…

I’m on it Sarah! I actually just tried a new cleanser and haven’t been thrilled with it but I have two that I really love so I will fill you in!

  6. I’ve been using the Regenerist products for a week now, the sculpting cream, the eye illuminator, the sunscreen (I had to mix the medium and the dark medium), as well as the concealer. My husband noticed a difference right away. My skin has always been extremely dry. I could not be happier with a line of products. Yesterday a co-worker looked at me in wonder and said: “you don’t have a line on your face” (I’m 61).

  7. This was so helpful… thank you!
