Beauty Product Review Friday: L’Oreal Double Extend Beauty Tubes Mascara

2009
05.29

Last week I decided that I wanted to try this new “tube mascara” thing that everyone is talking about. So I marched out to my local Target and tried to purchase the L’Oreal version of this new craze. I wanted L’Oreal because I feel like their mascara is the best, lasts the longest and their brushes are really good. When I got there - they were out. Not one L’Oreal Double Extend in sight. This peaked my curiosity even more and I actually went to ANOTHER Target to try and find it.

Once the mascara was in my possession - for about $8 - I was really excited to try it. Here is what it looks like:

mascara

So, starting with the white side, I applied the first coat. Basically it looks like you are putting white frosting on your eyelashes. I was impressed immediately with the lengthening effect. I felt like my lashes looked dramatically longer. Then I moved to the red side, the black mascara. Once I started applying the actual mascara I was kind of disappointed. Some of the length I added seemed to disappear with the the black coat. The brush applicator wasn’t really suited for adding volume either, so I ended up with lashes that looked longer, but not as full.

Overall, I would give this product a mixed review but it still might be right for you and here’s why: My lashes are already pretty long, so I usually focus on adding volume and this mascara wasn’t built for that purpose. However, if length is your issue, I would say this would be a good choice because I did notice a considerable difference in length, just not as much as it looked like when I applied the first coat. What I really want is for L’Oreal to make the second coat a volumizing mascara and then we would have magical mascara bliss. So L’Oreal…are you listening? I need magical.

As for the whole “tubes” thing - basically it isn’t a whole lot different than regular mascara. The first coat is where the “tubes” part comes in and I don’t know that I would have called it “tubes” if the marketing gods hadn’t already chosen that name. It is more like an eyelash blanket. It wraps around the lash and makes it appear longer. I guess that doesn’t sound much better. Can you tell I have a degree in political science, not marketing?

Okay so bottom line:I liked it, I didn’t love it. But I still love L’Oreal and I just know that one day they will go magical and I will thank them.

Next week: let’s talk self-tanners…the good, the bad and the orange.

Friday Beauty Product Review: Origins Never A Dull Moment Cleanser

2009
05.15

Alright ladies, let’s talk facial cleansers.

First, there are few things you need to know about cleansing:

  1. Your skin changes, what worked for you for the last 5 years might not work for the next 5 years….make adjustments.
  2. As you age, the type of cleanser you use is important - sometimes the cheap stuff just doesn’t cut it anymore.
  3. Wash your face day and night. No excuses. Make-up, sunscreen and natural elements left on your skin embed in your pores and make it more apparent that you are getting older. Who wants that?

Okay, down to the review. So lately I have been on a cleansing spree. Well, not a spree so much as a “I can’t make up my mind so I will try a new facial cleanser every month or so” kinda thing. What I have found is that I keep going back to what I think is the best cleanser for combination skin (don’t worry, if you have oily I have recommendations too). As I have aged I went from really oily skin to combo skin -meaning it is oily around my nose and chin but the rest is pretty dry. Here is the big list of cleansers I have tried:

  • Cetaphil
  • Purpose
  • Clinique (bar soap)
  • MAC
  • Origins - several different kinds
  • Oil of Olay - several different kinds
  • Philosophy

What I have found is that while each of these cleansers could work for you depending on skin type, only a few of them clean your skin without totally stripping it. So the one I love and always come back to?

Origins Never A Dull Moment:

face-wash

This is product is relatively inexpensive ($18.50 on the website, $18 in stores), it lasts a long time, lathers well and it smells good (like yummy fruit). Every time I try something else, the Hubby ends up trying it with me (he used to pretend that he was too manly for face wash but now he readily admits he likes the nice stuff). Every time I use another product other than Origins he asks, “When are we getting the good stuff back?” He is is right too, it is the good stuff. Beside the nice smell and how clean my face feels after I use it, I have to admit that I love how well it removes my eye make-up. Of course I know that I am supposed to use a gentle eye make-up remover for this job but I am just too lazy. I want a face soap that is going to pull double duty and Origins Never A Dull Moment definitely does the trick.

Now, if you have really oily skin, Origins makes a great alternative called Checks and Balances:

This cleanser is advertised for combination skin but I really think it is best for those with oily skin, as it left my combination skin a little too dry. However, this is Hubby’s favorite as he has pretty oily skin. He secretly wishes I would buy him his own bottle of this - maybe I will get it for him for his birthday. That would be funny, “Happy Birthday Honey! Here’s the face wash you love and a certificate for a man-pedi!” Okay, I digress. Let’s just say I don’t think you can go wrong with the Origins cleansing line as a whole, all of their products are all natural and I have found them to be worth the trip to Macy’s.

So, I couldn’t finish this post without also mentioning another facial cleanser that I love, but not for everyday. Once again, I am a fan of Oil of Olay but this time it is their Daily Facials line:

face-wash-3

I think they work great, especially for travel. No need to grab your big bottle of cleanser, just count out how many cloths you need for the trip and throw them in the bag. They get a gold star just for the amazing convenience. The only down side is that they can, after several days of use, cause your skin to be a little dry (they have an exfoliating property). I think for use 3-5 times a week though, they are perfect. They lather well and they feel as though you are getting a really deep clean. Also, they are pretty cheap at less than $8 a box. Again, I got mine at Costco with a coupon and I think I paid $20 for 4 packs.

Now - go wash your face!

Beauty Product Review Friday - Oil of Olay Regenerist Cream

2009
05.08

Hmmm, lotion. I love me some moisturizing, don’t you? However, finding the right mix for your skin type can be tricky. Also for those of us over 30, the anti-aging thing suddenly become important. What works? What is just good marketing? I wish I could answer those questions with some real definity but if I could, well, you would be reading my best selling book, not my blog! For now, I will settle for sharing with you one of my favorite moisturizers that I am not sure makes me look younger but it sure does make my skin happy.

Let me start by saying I am not a fan of store bought facial cleansers, moisturizers and serums. Well, at least I didn’t used to be. I was of the belief that the more expensive the product, the more likely it actually works. Let’s all go by La Mer! Yeah! However, because I am not made of money, my expectations needed to be more realistic. One day at Costco, I noticed a sale on Oil of Olay Regenerist Moisturizer.

The deal from Costco was two bottles for roughly $35. It was a particularly tight month and I was out of my expensive moisturizer so I took the plunge. I tried it that night and liked it. It was the right consistency and my skin felt really soft after I used it. You don’t need to use much because it is pretty concentrated, meaning the jar will go a long way. The smell was pleasant and I noticed that the next morning my skin still felt silky, as though I had just put it on.

Now, I am a bit compulsive about beauty products so I have a confession. Even though I was pleased with this product and had a Costco sized supply, I was still thinking I could find something better. I really like Philosophy brand products and I had recently read yet another article about their flagship moisturizer Hope in Jar:

hope-in-a-jar

So a month or so later, I had a coupon for Macy’s and decided to try out what I assumed would be a superior product because of the label. The consistency of this product disappointed me. It wasn’t oily but it felt as though it disappeared on my skin, leaving it wishing for more. I have normal to oily skin and I knew that this was what Philosophy recommended for my skin type, so it wasn’t a matter of a bad product-to-skin-type match up.

Within  a few weeks I was back to my Oil of Olay and now I can say I will not look back. The Regenerist line receives great reviews and I will officially jump on that band wagon. From what I can gather it is about $20 to purchase it online through Amazon or Ulta, or you can look for the Costco deal to come up again. I feel like this is a great bargain, considering I paid $38 for the highly touted Philosophy moisturizer that didn’t deliver.

*Update - I forgot to mention that this is supposed to be used as a after cleansing cream day and/or night. I usually use a primer with suncreen in the morning and this cream at night.

Skin Deep

2009
01.06

Lots of you know that I love make-up and hair. I grew up in and around salons that my mother owned and several of my sisters are, or were at some point, stylists. Further, as I mentioned before, my father owned 4 beauty schools. People, this stuff is in my blood.

My mother made me promise that I would go to college and not beauty school and I kept my promise. All the while, I labored in front of bathroom mirrors up and down the state of California doing my friends hair and make-up for different occasions. For years, as I well paid for a career in politics, I was thankful that my interest in beauty was no more than a side gig. Now that I sit working as a glorified secretary, the salon life doesn’t seem so bad.

Anyhow, I digress. Over the years my friends have often asked for my advice on skin care products or lip gloss or hairspray and I have offered many a suggestion. I have tried most hair care lines and I have purchased a small fortune’s worth of beauty products. There are some things that I LOVE and I am always passing on my favorites to people I know. I decided that once a week I would share some favorites with my readers along with some hints on application and pairings that have worked for me. Today we are starting with my Top 5 make-up picks.

The List

1. Boi-ing concealer by Benefit.

Hands down the best concealer I have ever used. For those of you saying to yourself - what is concealer? Unless you are under 25, you better find out. Apply a little of this under your eyes, with a brush, prior to putting on the rest of your make-up. You will look rested and younger than you did fresh out of the shower. Hint: generally you want a concealor about 2 shades lighter than your face make-up. If it isn’t lighter, your under eyes will look baggy.

2. MAC tinted lip glass

Do not confuse this gloss with MAC’s other glosses (luster glass, plush glass or dazzle glass). This is the their best gloss, it stays on, doesn’t feather and comes in a ridiculous array of colors. I think MAC hit gold when they created the three Viva Glam colors (VI SE, VI and V). Most women could pull off any of those colors on any given day. Hint: Use a similar color liner with your gloss and it will stay on better.

3. L’Oreal Telescopic Mascara in Carbon Black

First of all, L’Oreal’s web page is lame and I couldn’t grab a picture for you to see this product but you can go here and see it for yourself.

I love the telescopic mascara because of the brush specifically - I think it gives great volume and length. Now I had always believed that Lancome made the best mascara. They are kind of known for that. However, here’s a little secret - L’Oreal owns Lancome. Not all of their products are comparable - for instance I wouldn’t use L’Oreal foundation but that is just me. When it comes to mascara, it really is a toss up between the $21 Lancome mascara and the $8 L’Oreal one - so why not go with the cheaper product that you can pick up at Target when you are also buying socks and microwave popcorn? Hint: black mascara is best, even if you are fair skinned. For best application place the brush close to the base of your eyelid and slowly drag/tug the wand up and out. This will force your lashes to gather a little at the outer part of your eye, giving you a sexy effect.

4. Foundation: pick your poison.

For those of you looking for more fuller coverage and smooth application I think Benefit once again produces the best product: Playsticks. It is easy to apply (again with a brush) and it lasts all day. I think liquid foundation can be a scary thing for oily skin (that’s me) so this dense make-up provides the perfect mix of coverage and shine free wear.

Now for those of you just looking to take a little “edge” off of your skin I have two products to recommendand- I use them both. Generally I pick one of these on the days that I am not working but still don’t want to scare people at the grocery store.

The first ( shown above) is Philosophy’s the Supernatural. This is a great mineral based foundation that you can put on quickly and go. This stuff is truly great for a busy mom who wants a little polish but doesn’t have a lot of time.

The second product is one you are all familiar with  - Bare Escentuals (or Bare Minerals). This stuff is everywhere, all over television, Sephora and the magazines. It is a great product and I used it for 2 straight years. However, after a while I felt like I needed more smoothing coverage so I switched but I can still say that the product itself is everything it promises to be.

5. MAC eyeshadow - various shades

I have searched high and low for a make-up line with eye colors as good as MAC. People here is the deal - RESISTENCE IS FUTILE. No matter how much the MAC counter bugs you because the boys are wearing make-up, you must brave the GLAM and go to the Holy Land of eye products. While everyone will vary as to what color works for them I believe that all girls should own the color Shroom by MAC. It is perfect pale shadow that will feel dressy to those who don’t normally wear shadow and it will be a great highlighter to the braver souls who like some spice in their lives. Hint: If you have brown eyes, pair Shroom with Mulch, Cork or Woodwinked for a soft smokey eye. For blue eyes, pair Shroom with a little Knight Devine for a dressy look. Green eyed girls can pair Shroom with Juxt or Greensmoke.

Well there you have it. Concealor, foundation, mascara, lip gloss and eye shadow. Next week I am going to list my favorite skin care products, research on this topic has cost me the annual budget of a third world country but c’est la vie!

If you have any questions - feel free to email me or comment, I will do a post with Q&A if I get enough responses. Until then, happy make-up application to you all!
